In the early days of high
school football many games were played on 110 yard fields. G.L.
Dannenburg took advantage of the extra length by rushing for a 103 yard
TD vs Salina
**************************************
One rule in the twenties through the thirties that helped account for
lopsided scores was: The team that scores a point of any kind shall
receive the kickoff. As long as a team kept
scoring they kept the football. This also is reflected in the statistics
with Stilwell averaging 59 plays from scrimmage.
**************************************
In 1925 Stilwell defeated Salina 116-0. Because of the score the
Wildcats dropped SHS from their 1926 schedule. If you take note of the
game dates in 1927 you will see that Stilwell had a 9/22 game against
Sequoyah cancelled. Wanting to keep his troops sharp for the upcoming
Muskogee clash, Coach Thompkins asked Salina - who had an open date - to
make the trip to Stilwell with Thompkins paying the traveling expense on
9/23.
The Wildcats accepted the game, pleased with the new SHS boss'
hospitality and confident the outcome wouldn't be as bad. Stilwell won
the game 136-6. Salina has refused to play Stilwell in football since
that afternoon. Even during SHS' string of 1-9 seasons in the 1990's the
Wildcats turned down at least three offers to be placed on the schedule.
**************************************
Muskogee was the eventual State Champion.
The 9/30 game was so anticipated that the game was moved to the Muskogee
Fair Grounds and made the main attraction at the fair. A very special
guest at the game was aviator Charles Lindbergh who had just completed
his famous trans-Atlantic flight. His attendance at the fair was
scheduled in advance as the fair's theme that year was aviation.
**************************************
Unfortunately for Stilwell, Bradley, Dannenburg,
and Sixkiller- three-fourths of the starting backfield were injured
early in the first half. Under the rules at the time once a player left
the field they were not allowed to re-enter the game until the second
half. By that time Muskogee already led 27-0 and Stilwell was forced to
scrap their running game.
**************************************
Stilwell's two ties against Westville were also
marquee attractions. Both the YellowJackets and Pirates would finish the
season ranked in the top 10 of three statewide polls.
**************************************
Stilwell turned in their worst performance
in the school's young football history against Wagoner. Stilwell's
offense rumbled down the field at will but would hit a brick wall as
they approached the end zone. The Pirates fumbled 7 times inside the
Bulldog 10 yard line and 3 more times inside the twenty. Two fumbles
were returned for Wagoner touchdowns
