Harley McCollum was
originally from Wagoner. He played two seasons for the Bulldogs when he
ran into a problem...he grew. In this era of football the 6'7" 250 pound
lineman was a monster. He grew to the point that Wagoner didn't have a
helmet that fit him. He traveled "Green Country" looking for any school
that could supply him with a helmet. At least a dozen schools including
Westville, Tahlequah and Sallisaw all failed the test. When McCollum
arrived in Stilwell he found a helmet that fit him properly. McCollum's
family moved to Stilwell and Harley was a two-time first team NOAA
member, and was named All-State in this his Senior season.
McCollum went on to garner the distinction of being the only Stilwell
graduate to be named First-Team NCAA All-American. Harley starred at
Tulane, lettering four years and gaining First Team All-American honors
twice.
McCollum went on to immediately start as an Offensive Tackle in the NFL,
where he was on his way to a big career until being called into active
duty in World War II.
