Coach Arnold writes in his
scrapbook the following information on player weights:
" Line Average - 156 pounds
Backfield Average - 150 pounds
Team Average - 153 pounds "

Stilwell was picked dead last in the NOAA coaches
poll. The Indians surprised the "experts" by tying consensus #1 ranked
Stigler.
A defeat of Stigler by Tahlequah gave the Indians the lead in the NOAA
and went into the final game against Sallisaw.
The Muskogee Phoenix ran a big story of Stilwell's surprise rise to the
NOAA championship saying, "A victory is certain today as Stilwell takes
on a Sallisaw team which should prove to be a rout."
2-7 Sallisaw upset the Indians 6-0
******************************
With World War II on the horizon, the Oklahoma
National Guard began to mobilize troops. This sent many High School
athletes away from home. Stilwell was least affected by the
mobilization. Among those most hurt were Stigler, Tahlequah and
Sallisaw. Haskell was hit the hardest. The Haymakers lost all but one of
their starters from 1939. Forced to use 7th and 8th graders Haskell went
the entire 1940 season without scoring a single point. |
